Gabriella barely slept. She’d already spent most of the money a hundred times over in her head. Holidays, cars, clothes. She’d planned for some long-term investments, of course—she wasn’t irresponsible. She’d always wanted to build a property portfolio and rent out houses. Not to your usual young couples and social-housing types, though—she wanted to move into rentals for a higher class of client. Wealthy people in the UK for a few months on business, city pads for the children of rich Russian oligarchs who were over here at university. Those were the sorts of people she wanted to deal with. People who had more money than sense and weren’t interested in buying a house but wanted to have a base in a prestigious location. She knew investing in property was ideal, as prices would never come down in the long term. She could own a place for a few years, cream off a massive monthly rental fee and then sell it a few years later for a million or so more than she bought it for.
She knew it wouldn’t be quite as simple and straightforward as popping along to the solicitor’s with an empty suitcase and filling it with banknotes, but she didn’t mind biding her time and putting in some hard graft for her reward. She’d had to do that already after Ted died, and she was perfectly happy to do it again. Good things come to those who wait. At least with Bart there would be no children or family members to put up a fight and challenge her inheritance, but that didn’t mean it would all be plain sailing. This time the fight was likely to be with the police and the insurance company, who’d no doubt want to investigate the circumstances of the accident a little more fully than they might do otherwise.
In many ways, it was a good job she hadn’t killed off David, too. Although it did mean she had to put up with his sudden change in personality after she filed for divorce. Even once everything had been settled, the atmosphere was thick with vengeance. It was just a shame he was so dull and useless that his emotions went absolutely nowhere.
She rolled over and looked at the bedside clock. It was quarter past six, the light levels starting to rise slowly outside, but nowhere near enough to call it daytime. Had the windows been open, she was sure she’d be able to hear the birds singing, ready to welcome this glorious new day. Bart snored beside her, blissfully unaware that he was enjoying his last sleep. Well, his second-to-last sleep. His last one probably wouldn’t be quite so enjoyable. Not for him, anyway.
She slipped her legs out of bed and felt the soft, deep-pile carpet between her toes. She’d never felt so alive. She made her way across to the en suite bathroom and closed the door behind her, turning to look at herself in the mirror. She always had a faint smile; she was just one of those people with a naturally happy resting face.
